William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” of Pennsylvania not only laid the foundation for core American ideals and values, but also offers an example of who was living in Colonial America and why.  Explanation and use of primary sources is at the core of this program.

  • Introduce/review the role of primary sources and how historians use them to develop historical narratives
  • Use primary sources to highlight and learn about specific  individuals who lived inColonial times and how their stories fold into the larger historical narrative
  • Introduce/review some of the  basic daily life activities performed by the individuals highlighted in the program
  • Introduce/review the role of WilliamPenn in the founding of Pennsylvania and basic American principles

What was life like in the late 17th Century? Told through the use of primary sources and interactive activities,  this program shares the stories of individuals  who lived in earlyPennsylvania.  Each story demonstrates what life was like for men and women, free and enslaved, Native American and immigrant.  Together, these  stories illustrate the diversity  of Colonial life as well as providing  a basis  for understanding  the historical process.

Originally  built in 1683, Pennsbury Manor is the reconstructed  home ofPennsylvania’s founder, William Penn.
